This story started when Rob needed somewhere to work from home on his new food business, ‘Jerky King’.

Rob had apparently learned that due to food and health regulations, producing processed food for sale in a residential property is not permissible. As Rob’s home kitchen was squarely off the table, Rob began his search for something he thought would be suitable for his idea and also affordable. Rob had reportedly spent many years running his own business operations, ‘Carpet King Steam Cleaning’ and ‘King Hit Pest Management’. Making beef jerky started out as a hobby. Eventually, after some extremely successful sales trials at the local pub, Rob soon realised there was a demand for his tasty beef jerky. Rob’s hobby quickly took on a life of its own and ‘Jerky King’ was crowned as a new business venture. Another aspect of this new business in Rob’s mind was the fact it was something he could take into retirement. Rob reasoned that if he ran ‘Jerky King’ from home it allowed him to run everything at his own leisure while offering a handy supplement to any subsequent retirement income. Ultimately, Rob saw for himself that it was a great home business for now and the future.

When Rob first started considering building structures for ‘Jerky King’ he looked at many permanent options such as granny flats, backyard studios, commercial industrial sheds, backyard office cabins, and many other structures that would suit a commercial food home business. However, if he ever wanted to move his hobby-business to another location the permanent nature of these buildings would not allow Rob to preserve his investment in the highly specialised fit-out for his unique jerky endeavours.

He boldly positioned the movable pod at the front of his house to give the appearance of a pop-up store. Rob wanted a space that not only enabled him to craft jerky but also included an area for friendly visitors to sample his tasty creations.

Some of the fittings in the pod included a dishwasher, sink, stainless steel catering bench, and air-conditioning. Rob also installed a keg fridge for his home brew beer. According to Rob, the finished pod met all the necessary regulations and would allow ‘Jerky King’ to gradually evolve from a hobby into a commercial food business. If Rob ever changed address, he could just bring along his custom-configured pod.

“I’m very happy with my end result”, said Rob. “So is my wife because I no longer take over the kitchen. The Backyard Pods team was terrific with a helpful approach.”
