The design challenge for Backyard Pods was to provide virtually everything 1-2 people might need for comfortable, self-contained holiday or farm-stay accommodation in a pod no larger than 3m x 6m.

Living and sleeping zone

This design can include a double-sized bed, or a sofa bed opening into a double-sized bed. Of course, the sofa bed option allows more use of floor-space by day, and some sofa beds from IKEA have storage underneath for bedding and linen.

The wardrobe is full-depth, with drawers underneath. The small desk has a drawer and built-in charging bay. The desk can also function as an eating area. There is a wall-mounted TV above.

Using top-quality IKEA kitchen cabinetry and fittings, we managed to squeeze a fully functional kitchenette into just 1.8m of wall-space.

There are wall cupboards for glassware, cups, and pantry items – with a fitted microwave and handy extra cupboard above. The stainless steel sink is full-size, with draining board with mixer tap. The bench-top area allows for preparing snacks and beverages. Generous base cabinets accommodate the pull-out waste sorting bin, shelf for cleaning products, a concealed bar fridge, and deep drawers for storing cutlery, crockery, and small appliances.

There is plenty of natural light and flow-through ventilation thanks to the sliding glass door and full-length combination awning windows (with fly screens).

Through a sliding pocket-door is a surprisingly spacious bathroom. Our example shows a 1.5m bath with shower over and glass bath screen, however, a double-sized shower option is also available. The toilet suite is placed discretely and ergonomically. The full-size 80cm-wide vanity unit has two deep storage drawers underneath, and a trendy bench-mounted vessel with mixer tap. Above the vanity, the 2-door mirrored wall cabinet means there is plenty of storage in the bathroom.
