Granny flat-style teenage retreat (DPU) 4m x 9m at Reservoir, Melbourne VIC
This ‘granny flat’ in Reservoir, a suburb of Melbourne, was built for a teenager to live independently (with visiting friends, entertainment, etc) yet still on the family property behind the main house. The granny flat design is contemporary and fully approved. Engineered floorboards, plenty of storage, custom stairs, and entry porch. Some people think that a granny flat 4m x 9m is not so small and this one makes great use of space – check it out. The exterior wall cladding colour is Colorbond Basalt.
We like the timber-framed hinged entry door as an alternative to the usual aluminium-framed sliding doors or stacker doors, and the timber accents work well with the bronze-toned window frames. This teenage retreat features not just a ‘kitchenette’ but a real kitchen with full-sized oven and cooktop, noting the ceramic splashback for fire safety compliance with the edge of the cooktop being adjacent to cabinetry. There is also an ensuite bathroom consisting of a toilet suite, vanity, and shower allowing the occupant family member to have almost complete independence from the main house. The exclusion of laundry facilities is the only compromise compared to having a completely self-contained secondary dwelling (not easily doable in VIC).
