Elevated pods overcoming the challenges of sloping land

Categories: Featured News, News

When you’ve got a sloping block of land, it can be hard to imagine how a home extension or granny flat could be constructed high enough to compensate for the slope and connect with the primary residence. Here are some examples of how Backyard Pods made impossible-looking slopes yield more livable value for homeowners.

Example #1 – elevated home extension Colo, Sydney

On this beautiful bushland block in riverside Como, Sydney, the owner of this property had the imagination for a Backyard Pod that was elevated and fully integrated into the two-storey core building (including the entry), with more single-storey rooms extending out on the other side. The elevation of the Backyard Pods home extension allows the new rooms, being on a higher level than the main house, to take in the maximum bushland views (pictured above)

Example #2 – elevated granny flat in Oxenford, Gold Coast

At this property in Oxenford, northern Gold Coast, the small backyard was so steeply declining that to step off the back deck would be like stepping off a cliff. So when family circumstances meant that the homeowner needed a granny flat, it looked so impossible that it might have meant selling the property. That’s where Backyard Pods, with our network partners, was able to achieve the fully approved and certified granny flat at an extremely reasonable cost. The homeowner and occupant are delighted with the result. The layout of this Gold Coast granny flat is slightly different than the usual with the bathroom in the centre, rather than as an ensuite, providing an entry area and saving any visitors from having to go through the bedroom to use the facilities.

Example #3 – elevated granny flat at Bli Bli, Sunshine Coast

We’ve looked at two examples that are both radical in elevation and with exposed piers. Gentle slopes are also made easy with Backyard Pods being available with different pier-lengths to compensate for your site’s topography. At Bli Bli, on the Sunshine Coast, the homeowner wanted a granny flat with enough elevation to cover all the plumbing and pipework not just for the granny flat but also the pool. You can see how all the ‘junk” is hidden by the ‘skirt’ around the building.
