Easy DIY multi-purpose ‘family fun’ pod 3.6m x 6m at Windsor Downs, Sydney NSW

This family quickly and easily made their flatpack kit from Backyard Pods into a much-loved backyard cabin for slumber parties, office work, a rumpus room, and music practice.

It’s an example of how a Backyard Pod can create an affordable space for everyone to enjoy.

Whether you have a small-sized block, or an acre of land as in this instance, why not make an extra room for a garden retreat or multi-purpose hangout?

Background

David was originally looking for a combination of a ‘cubby house’ and second-dwelling structure for guests. After shopping around in stores, he was disappointed in the quality and price of the spare room structures and kits that he’d found in display centres.

David is not a builder by trade but has strong handyman skills and an eye for materials that will stand the test of time. The build-your-own options that he was seeing in display centres just weren’t up to his standards.

“Most structures I looked at in person were roughly $10,000 and not great quality, made from very low-grade timber. That’s when we started looking online and found Backyard Pods.”

While this Backyard Pod was intended as a place for guests and for his kids, it has extended to the rumpus room, teen retreat, and home office.

As David said: “A Backyard Pod is basically a metal box – what you use it for is open to your imagination”.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Construction

David’s Backyard Pod didn’t take long to put up at all.

He was able to put up his Backyard Pod over the weekends in just one month, estimating it took just 6 or 7 days altogether.

He ordered a basic ColorBond® Deep Ocean Backyard Pod kit 3.6m x 6m and was able to construct it almost entirely himself, with the help of a few friends (and the kids) for some heavy lifting.

For David, constructing his studio was simple. “The pods are well-designed, well pre-made, and delivered with everything you need to put them up.” Despite a few instructional queries and a sliced finger (nothing serious), it was smooth sailing to put it all together.”

David is a DIY success story, but if you aren’t sure if your construction skills are up to the task, we are happy to connect you with a professional installer in your area.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Result

Budget was a clinching factor for David choosing a Backyard Pod. He was impressed with the quality of materials overall and initially chose a Backyard Pod above other standalone structures like a shipping container or a store-bought cubby house because of the solid Australian-Made materials and the ability to integrate his own timber as a feature.

He hasn’t been disappointed.

“It’s got a better carpet than my house. The only thing it doesn’t have is a toilet and running water.”

So far, the pod’s versatility has given it lots of different uses for David and his family. It’s been a comfortable guest room for both long-term and short-term guests. It’s been a place to host parties, and it’s been a rehearsal space for his daughter’s drum practice.

“It’s worked out perfectly. My mother has come to stay for several months, my older son was staying there for a while.”

The pod has surpassed it’s intended purpose as just a place for guests to become a home office, teen retreat and more. David jokes that during kids’ parties and drum practice sessions, the Backyard Pod has made his home a parents’ retreat as well.

The entertainment space is also used to host what his family affectionately calls “pod parties”. Six or seven of his daughter’s friends will have sleepovers in the family’s new rumpus room.

“They love it! Basically, it’s a lot of Netflix and sugar in their own space.”

“I would definitely recommend this product to others. They are very versatile, easy to install, you can take them away… If you use it for an office there’s tax deduction… it’s a structure with so many possibilities”.

From the Sales Team

“David is a dream customer; he came to us with a can-do attitude, and made it happen so quickly.”

“The colour choice is just perfect for his garden setting and the timber surrounds and deck just set the it off nicely … it almost pops!”

“Very nice rendition of a Backyard Pod, it would lend itself really well to a coastal/poolside setting, the ‘Deep Ocean’ colour choice is very luxe looking.”

“We enjoyed David and his family’s journey, happily supporting him through the construction stage – not that he needed much help, just a little confirmation he was on the right track.”

“A classic Aussie backyard story. Thanks for sharing, David.”
