Elevated 1-bedroom granny flat 3.6m x 9m at Goodna, near Ipswich Qld
Our customer wanted a prefab granny flat delivered complete and simply connected on-site. But not everyone who wants a prefab granny flat can get one to their site. That’s where our flatpack kit 3.6m x 9m with extra-long piers came in! The entire 1-bedroom granny flat project was completed to move-in-readiness through our Backyard Pods network.
Prefab granny flats and granny flats made from shipping containers are delivered to the site fully complete. They’re move-in-ready once the on-site works and connections are completed. However, due to the enormous weight of the completed building, and the size, they are usually craned into position – sometimes over the top of the main house.
Not every site has the potential to get a complete building delivered into position. It’s a fact that with many sites, our Backyard Pods flatpack building system is the way to go.
For our customer in Goodna, a suburb on the Brisbane side of Ipswich, wanting to build a 1-bedroom granny flat, it turned out that our flatpack kit was the only practical and cost-effective solution. The bush block had not just access difficulties but also a steep slope.
The granny flat approval in Brisbane was organised by our network partner, an architect and project manager who also saw the entire project through to completion for our customer. The extra-long piers were engineering-specified and certified as required. The 3.6m x 9m granny flat was permissible including the 2m x 9m veranda and deck, both supplied by Backyard Pods as flatpack kits.
For people in Brisbane wanting a granny flat, it’s a great idea to start with a flatpack kit from Backyard Pods. Any granny flat in Australia must have approval, and we can help any of our customers in NSW and QLD (where rentable granny flats are allowed) to get theirs approved where doable. VIC has different rules and we help customers down there differently – but in NSW and QLD many properties are allowed to have a secondary dwelling.
As you can see from our 1-bedroom granny flat design in our gallery above, the finished granny flat at Goodna features one bedroom, an open-plan living and dining area, a kitchenette, and a centrally-positioned ensuite combined with laundry. The choice of Colorbond Pale Eucalypt for the external cladding blends softly into the bushy surrounds.
Another great thing about building a granny flat using a flatpack kit is that all the interior fittings and finishes are up to you. You can work with your installer or licensed builder to achieve the style, standard, and budget you’re wanting for your granny flat.
There are plenty of options if you start with a flatpack kit. You can DIY if you’ve got tools and building experience. You can become an owner-builder and control all of the trades for yourself (just like on The Block, if you’re interested). You can ask our network partners to handle the entire project for you to completion. Or you can get installation to lock-up and finish the interior fit-out with a bit of DIY and trades only where needed. It’s all up to you.
