Granny flat storage ideas and essentials
When building a granny flat, once all the decisions are made for the building size and layout, you should plan the interior storage requirements for your occupants to live comfortably and clutter-free.
Tip #1 built-in wardrobes
As most granny flat occupants are downsizing, you should plan to install the largest built-in wardrobe that your granny flat bedroom will accommodate. The built-in wardrobe should have hanging space, shelving, and preferably integrated drawers. Think of hanging items, folded items, and racked items (shoes). The wardrobe might also need to store towels and linen, and possibly a stick vacuum and ironing board, depending on what other storage options are made available.

Tip #2 integrated kitchen waste bin
If you’re building a low-budget granny flat you’re probably not too concerned about waste bins. But if you’re going for a kitchen with a sleek look, the integrated kitchen waste bin is ideal for keeping the entire floor clutter-free. Integrated waste bins can be mounted to the inside of the sink door, or mounted on tracks inside the sink cupboard (depending on brand and model).

Tip #3 gas-lift storage bed
Available from most furniture retailers, the gas-lift storage bed is a great idea for granny flats. The gas makes it near-effortless to raise the bed frame and mattress to access the capacious storage capacity underneath. You can also use vacuum bags to further compress blankets, clothing, and other soft items to be stored.
