Contemporary poolside guest cabin with ensuite 3m x 6m completed at Seven Hills, Sydney NSW

Almost anyone with a pool might dream of a luxury poolhouse with facilities for changing and entertainment, or a multi-purpose backyard studio where guests might like to stay. You’ll need approval/certification for a fully habitable backyard cabin but looking at this example, only 3m x 6m in size, your poolhouse doesn’t need to take up much space in your backyard!

Our customer at Seven Hills, a leafy, family-oriented suburb in north-western Sydney, wanted a multi-purpose studio room with ensuite facilities, tucked into a tight space in the yard near the fenced pool area. Building approval was taken care of by an experienced Sydney architect in our network, meaning the cabin is ‘legal’ and insurable for occupation. The value of the property is permanently enhanced by the addition of an extra guest suite or living area with facilities (ie: not just a shed with limited usage and minimal value).

Once our customer knew that their poolside multi-purpose studio could go ahead as planned, the decision was made to purchase our classic 3m x 6m flatpack Backyard Pod kit (no eaves) in Colorbond Surf Mist for wall cladding, guttering, and barges. Surf Mist is the closest colour to white in the Colorbond range (but without the glare of vivid white).

Contrasting the Colorbond Surf Mist are our energy-efficient Polar Eco View double-glazed aluminium sliding doors and windows with black frames selected. Polar Eco View windows are modular so they can be stacked and configured at different angles to deflect rain or catch the breeze. They come with locks and matching flyscreens are available.

This project features a greater amount of glazing than would be typical for a Backyard Pod of this size. It’s what the homeowner wanted. You can appreciate from the pictures sent in how the result is light and airy, making the most of the poolside outlook. The interior lining is conventional plasterboard and the ensuite fit-out is simple and functional.

It’s amazing how our customer managed to accommodate a spacious bedroom with wardrobe, bedsides, desk area, and ensuite inside a 3m x 6m Backyard Pod. Air-conditioning provides year-round comfort while block-out blinds add privacy. Floating floorboards are easy-care and characterful. We love the soaring ceilings inside our Backyard Pods (above-average height inside), this example with modern downlights.
